Double-sided dombra
Double-sided dombra (ashaly dombra) is a unique variation of the traditional Kazakh dombra, featuring two strings on each side, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a four-stringed dombra. One side of the instrument is tuned in «teris burau» (reverse tuning), while the other side is tuned in «on burau» (standard tuning), requiring exceptional skill from the performer.
In ancient times, this type of dombra was used in competitions between kui performers (kuishi). Among dombra players, it was known by different names such as «asha», «ambebap» (universal), and «kos bet» (double-sided dombra). This type of dombra was mostly used by left-handed musicians. The body of the instrument typically has a rectangular shape, about 5–7 cm thick and approximately 85 cm long.

Ushem dombra
Ushem dombra is one of the rare and unusual traditional Kazakh musical instruments. This type of dombra is distinguished by its unique body shape: it is carved from a single piece of wood and consists of three separate, rounded (spherical) sections. These parts are connected seamlessly, forming a single unified structure. This gives the instrument its distinctive acoustic properties - the sound it produces is deep, warm, and rich with natural echo. Ushem dombra is typically made from dense hardwood, such as beech. Beech wood provides durability and contributes to the high-quality resonance of the instrument.
Playing ushem dombra requires a high level of skill and dexterity, as its shape and resonating structure differ from the standard dombra. For this reason, ushem dombra primarily attracts professional musicians and researchers interested in exploring its sound and construction.
